Salsa is the world’s most popular Latin dance. It is loved because of it’s music, it’s origins and it’s many dance style’s. Salsa refers to a fusion of informal dance styles having roots in the Caribbean (especially in Cuba and Puerto Rico), Latin and North America. The name “Salsa” is the Spanish word for sauce, connoting (in American Spanish) a spicy flavor.
Salsa is usually a partner dance, although there are recognized solo steps which we also learn in our class to be more confident, balanced and to learn what to do on the “montuno”
The what? Yes, the montuno. We don’t only learn you the dance steps, but also how the music is build up, and what to do on what piece of the music.
There’s a bit in the music called “the montuno” and on social dances it’s common to dance solo on these parts. It’s more for the advanced dancer, but we learn you early on so you’ll be prepaired 😉
Salsa styles
There are many characteristics that may identify a style. There may be different step patterns, different timing of steps, particular movements on the dance floor, dancer preference of turns and moves, attitude, dress code, and others. The presence of one or more of particular elements does not necessarily define a particular style. For example, many styles can be danced “On One” or one style may be danced “On One” or “On Two”. The following are the major “recognizable” styles.
CUBAN
L.A. (LINEAR)
VENEZOLANA (DOMINICANA)
COLOMBIAN
MAMBO (N.Y.)
PUERTO RICAN
The style we teach is the LA STYLE It’s one of the most common styles danced over the world. As a LA styler you can dance with people who dance other styles. We teach you in class the difference and how to addapt to it. Our way of teaching has a structure based on how to make it easy for the lead/men. As they need to lead, and remember. We have found a way to make that easier. We need leads/men as there’s allways short on them. That’s why we wanted t make it easier so the follow/lady can grow fast aswell. We teach in a group formation, but we walk past everyone to give personal tips and advice. There’s also no program written in advance. We teach you what we think you can handle. We addapt our program to the group.
